What is vitiligo?
Vitiligo is a condition in which your skin loses the pigment-producing cells of your skin, called melanocytes. This results in white patches along your body, which is more noticeable in patients with darker skin types. Vitiligo affects about 1% of the population worldwide.
What is the cause of vitiligo?
The exact cause is unclear but certain factors have been thought to play a role:
- Autoimmune – The immune system attacking its own pigment-producing melanocytes
- Genetics – About 30% of vitiligo cases run in families.
- Neurogenic factors – Certain proteins that are toxic to melanocytes are released by nerve endings, leading to vitiligo
How is it treated?
Treatment is personalized depending on your disease severity and the specific areas that are affected. Treatment options may include prescription anti-inflammatory creams, light therapy, laser therapy, and depigmentation therapy.
