What is seborrheic dermatitis?
Also known as “dandruff” in mild cases, or “cradle cap” in infants, seborrheic dermatitis is a skin condition that causes flaking, mild redness and itching. Seborrheic dermatitis is most commonly seen on the scalp, but it may also involve the face, upper chest, and the diaper area in infants. The exact cause is unknown, but it may be related to an abnormal immune response to a yeast that lives commensally on human skin, called the Pityrosporum yeast. Seborrheic dermatitis is NOT contagious and is NOT due to poor hygiene. Overall, it is an extremely common condition and genetics may play a role in its development as well.
How is it treated?
Although not curable, symptoms may be well-controlled with proper care. Mild cases may be treated with over-the-counter shampoos such as Heads and Shoulders or Selsun Blue, while more severe cases may require prescription medicated shampoos or topical creams.
