What is rosacea? 

Rosacea is a common, chronic skin disease characterized by facial redness and flushing, acne-like bumps, and sun-sensitivity. Rosacea typically develops in patients 30-50 years of age and is more common in females. Patients may have certain triggers such as spicy foods, heat exposure, exercise, alcohol, caffeine, or emotional distress, amongst others. 

 

What is the cause of rosacea?

The exact cause is not understood, but vascular hyperactivity, immune system activation, UV exposure and microbial exposure (Demodex mites) have all been suggested to play a role in Its development. 

 

What are the different variants of rosacea?

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic – Characterized by facial redness, flushing, and enlarged vessels termed “telangiectasias”
  2. Papulopustular  – Characterized by acne-like bumps
  3. Rhinophyma – More commonly seen in males. Characterized by enlargement, thickening and cobblestoning of the nose. 
  4. Ocular – Often characterized by symptoms of dry, itchy, irritated eyes. 

 

How is rosacea treated?

Treatment is personalized depending on the severity of your disease and the type of rosacea present. Common options may include:

  • Photoprotection/sunscreen use 
  • Topical therapies/creams
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Intense-pulsed light (IPL) or a vascular laser for facial redness and telangiectasias
  • Isotretinoin
