Molluscum

What is Molluscum?

Molluscum are small bumps caused by a superficial viral infection. They are very common, especially in kids, often spreading by skin to skin contact or by contaminated towels, gym equipment, clothing etc.   Molluscum are not harmful or dangerous, and typically do not cause any symptoms. They typically present as small bumps with a central umbilication.

How long do they last?

In healthy patients, molluscum infection is self-limited and typically self-resolves within months to one year on average. If you are immunocompromised, these bumps may be bigger than usual or may last longer.

How is Molluscum Treated?

Treatment is not always needed as this infection is self-limit and will self-resolve. Options to speed resolution include:

  • Cryosurgery with liquid nitrogen
  • Cantharidin solution application
  • Topical creams such as retinoids and imiquimod
