Eczema is an all-encompassing term used to describe conditions that cause itchy, rough red patches on the skin. Common causes of eczema include:
- Atopic Dermatitis – This is a very common cause of eczema in children and associated with asthma and seasonal allergies.
- Contact Dermatitis – This is another common cause of eczema, broadly separated into irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). There are many causes of contact dermatitis, and common offenders include soaps, detergents, fragrances, preservatives, adhesives, cosmeceutical ingredients, metals, and certain plants such as poison ivy.
- Nummular Eczema – This appears as coin-shaped itchy patches, usually on the arms or legs.
- Seborrheic Dermatitis – Commonly referred to as “dandruff” in mild cases, this presents as flaking in your hair or red, scaly patches on your face, scalp or upper chest.
Generally, there is no cure for eczema but symptoms can be controlled with appropriate therapy based upon your personalized needs.
