Acne

Acne is an extremely common condition defined by clogged pores (blackheads or whiteheads), pimples, and deeper painful bumps (termed “nodulocystic acne”). Acne typically affects your face, neck, shoulders, upper chest and back. It is a very frustrating condition but also very treatable. Acne affects around ~50 million Americans annually.

It is very important to treat your acne to prevent any permanent scarring. Furthermore, uncontrolled acne has been associated with an increased risk of anxiety and depression, low self-esteem, and decreased quality of life.

How is acne treated?
Prescription medications are your foundation for treatment. However, knowing how to use them and to combine them properly is essential. Treatment of acne includes:

  • Topical retinoids
  • Topical antibiotics
  • Oral antibiotics
  • Anti-hormonal agents (oral contraceptives, spironolactone)
