Microneedling, or percutaneous induction needling, is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles, and for overall skin rejuvenation. The treatment involves creating small, controlled, microwounds which subsequently stimulates the production of collagen and elastin in your skin. Results from microneedling may be synergistically improved when combined with platelet rich plasma (PRP) as well.
Process:
First, a topical numbing medication is applied to the skin prior to beginning the treatment. Then, a microneedling pen is used to create, small, controlled wounds in the skin. These small microwounds stimulate your body’s own fibroblasts to stimulate collagen and elastin production. If combined with PRP, we will draw and process your own blood to extract a rich PRP serum, which will be applied during your microneedling treatment.
What are the indications for microneedling?
- Acne scars
- Skin rejuvenation
- Fine lines
- Wrinkles
- Pore-size reduction
- Aging skin/sun damage
- Skin texture irregularities
How many treatments are required?
Most patients undergo 1-4 treatments for noticeable results. Several factors, including your individualized desired results and the severity of your skin condition will determine the number of recommended treatments. Usually, microneedling may be repeated every 4-6 weeks.
What should I expect after microneedling?
You will notice some redness and mild swelling for 2-4 days post-procedure. There may be mild bruising that typically resolves in 1 week. It is important to avoid any exfoliators, retinoids, or peels until your skin has completely healed. Sun protection is also very important during this time as well.
