Acne Scarring

Acne scars are a very common sequelae of inflammatory acne. Around 30% of patients will develop permanent scarring, usually seen in those with more severe and extensive acne. The best treatment for acne scars is preventing them in the first place, and it’s important to promptly treat your acne to avoid any additional scarring. For the scars that have already developed, there are multiple treatment options available to minimize their appearance and improve your skin.

What are the different types of acne scars?

There are three subtypes of “atrophic,” or depressed, acne scars, including:

  1. “Boxcar” scars
  2. “Rolling” scars
  3. “Icepick” scars

acne scar subtypes (ice pick, rolling, boxcar)

Acne scars may also be enlarged, called “hypertrophic” acne scarring.

Acne scars can be challenging to treat and usually require a multi-faceted approach, depending on the type of scarring present. Treatment options may include:

  • Sublative radiofrequency
